Background

During my postgraduate degree in Chemistry I became enamoured with polymer chemistry and eventually managed to find a position in the resin field towards the end of 1981. Over the following 40 years I have consistently been involved in the formulation, production and usage of solvent based resins across 4 continents. Positions occupied ranging from Technical Services Manager, Technical Manager, Production Manager, Site Manager, Sales Manager through to Chemical Division Manager.

As a professional chemist I have always enjoyed the complexity of some of the resin formulations and the plethora of end uses. As with many other subjects, the depth and breadth of chemistry is enormous, and one can rarely, if ever, say that there's nothing left to learn.

What has struck me over the years in the resin industry is that, in certain circumstances, resin chemistry is something of a 'black art' and there are many misconceptions arising which I have tried to dispel by reverting to the fundamental chemical principals.

Within the confines of these pages I have hoped to provide some of the basic raw materials used in resins, how to evaluate which are the most suitable for a particular application, and how to combine them into formulations for a specified target market

As such, this website is aimed at providing a more comprehensive guide to the practical formulation and production of resins: from raw material choice all the way through to processing and final resin quality control.

This website is not a substitute for the many texts that are already available, and does not include any new developing aspects of polymer chemistry. Rather it is designed to provide sufficient knowledge of the individual resin types to be able to formulate, and produce, commercially viable products which is why, I had thought of naming this website "The Resin Recipe Cookbook'.

Consultancy

During my industrial career I have helped companies (both resin and coating) improve their technology, products, quality, sales and avoid expensive pitfalls. This has been done by staff training in the areas of R&D, QA, production and sales, both on-site and remotely. If you feel that you might benefit from my experience in the solvent based resin industry, I do offer a consultancy in this regard. Consultancy is offered either on a remote (off-site), or local (on-site) basis, as required.
